How to register as an adult Volunteer

AYSO Mira Mesa Region 285

Volunteer Requirements

AYSO Mira Mesa is 100% volunteer-run. Every coach, referee, team parent, board member, and field helper makes the season possible.

Thank You for Stepping Up

Thank you for volunteering with AYSO Mira Mesa. We are 100% volunteer-run, with no paid staff. No coaches, no referees, no team support, no sidelines without volunteers.

Whether you are coaching, refereeing, managing a team, serving on the board, or helping behind the scenes, there are required steps that help keep our players, families, and volunteers safe.

Volunteer Quick Start

Step 1

Log in to your Sports Connect account at miramesaayso.org.

Step 2

Register for your volunteer role for the current season.

Step 3

Complete your background check, SafeSport, Live Scan, and required AYSOU trainings.

Step 4

Wait for clearance before working directly with players.

What All Adult Volunteers Must Complete

Every adult volunteer must complete the required safety and role-specific requirements before participating with players.

Background Check

Required for adult volunteers through Sterling Volunteers.

SafeSport

Required for adult volunteers. Annual refreshers are required.

AYSO Safe Haven

Required AYSO child and volunteer safety training.

CDC Concussion Awareness

Required training for recognizing and responding to possible concussions.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Required safety training for California youth sports volunteers.

Live Scan Fingerprinting

Required for California volunteers. Must be completed specifically for AYSO.

Role-Specific Training

Coaches, referees, and other roles must complete the training required for their position.

Summary of the Laws

Coaches should complete AYSO’s Summary of the Laws of the Game.

Before You Start

All adult volunteers must have their own Sports Connect account, use a unique email address, and use their legal name for background check accuracy.

Use Your Existing Account

Do not create a second account if you already registered your player. Use the same account.

Use Your Legal Name

Your name must match your government ID for background screening and fingerprinting.

Use a Unique Email

Each adult volunteer needs their own email address tied to their volunteer record.

How to Register as an Adult Volunteer

Step 1: Log In

Log in to your existing Sports Connect account at miramesaayso.org. This is the same system used for player registration.

Login or Create Account Instructions

Step 2: Register for a Volunteer Role

In your account, click Volunteer, select the current season, choose your role, and submit your volunteer application.

Common roles include Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Referee, Team Manager, Board Member, and other support roles.

Volunteer Registration Instructions

Step 3: Complete or Renew Your Background Check

First-time volunteers must complete a background check through Sterling Volunteers. Returning volunteers must renew if their background check has expired.

After registering as a volunteer, your risk status will be evaluated automatically. If needed, you will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers. Check your spam or junk folder if you do not see it.

Step 4: Complete California Live Scan Fingerprinting

Under California AB 506, all youth sports volunteers must complete Live Scan fingerprinting. Live Scans are not transferable between organizations.

Even if you completed Live Scan for a school, scouts, another sport, or another organization, you must complete one specifically for AYSO. Do not complete Live Scan on your own without Region-specific paperwork, or it may not be accepted.

Step 5: Complete SafeSport Training

SafeSport is mandatory for adult volunteers. From Sports Connect, click the training or graduation cap area, locate SafeSport, and follow the link to create or log in to your SafeSport account.

Complete the SafeSport Trained course through U.S. Soccer Federation. The first course takes the longest, and annual refreshers are shorter.

Employer Donations for Volunteer Hours

One of the most valuable and often overlooked ways to support our program is through employer donation programs tied to volunteer hours.

If you coach, referee, serve as a team parent, volunteer at events, or help with region operations, your employer may donate money to AYSO based on the time you volunteer.

Volunteer Grants

Many companies donate money to nonprofits based on employee volunteer hours.

No Extra Cost

These donations usually cost you nothing beyond the time you are already giving.

Local Impact

Employer donations help fund scholarships, equipment, uniforms, training, and safety supplies.

Information Needed for Employer Donation Requests

Organization Name American Youth Soccer Organization
Local Region AYSO Region 285 – Mira Mesa
Federal EIN 95-6205398
Nonprofit Status 501(c)(3)

Important: Always include “AYSO Region 285 – Mira Mesa” so donations are directed to our local league.

When to Submit

A good time to submit employer donation or volunteer grant requests is at the end of the Fall or Spring season, or once you have logged a meaningful number of volunteer hours.

Check your employer’s giving or volunteer portal. Many HR departments already have step-by-step instructions for these programs.

Need Help?

Complete your requirements before your first practice, game, or volunteer shift. This protects kids, protects volunteers, and keeps our region running the right way.
